Position: Farm Manager
About the organization:
Rancho San Benito is a community funded organization that provides training and guidance to experienced Farmworkers to prepare them to become Farmers with the skills necessary to own and operate their own farms. Now in its first year of operation, Rancho San Benito provides access to land, supplies, equipment, and the training to learn and practice proven and new farming methods. In addition, training in the basics of ecological farm management, farm economics, farm product marketing and related skills are provided. Farm workers completing the training program will possess the skills needed to become owners/operators of their own farm.
Rancho San Benito is located on Ohlone Territory in the Wavecrest area of Half Moon Bay. The Farm Manager position is a full time position with a workweek of Tuesday-Saturday. The Manager reports to Hektor Calderon, Board Member.
The Mission of Rancho San Benito
The mission of Rancho San Benito is to equip Farmworkers to become providers of healing/healthy food by using ecological farming concepts to enrich the culture, educational, economic, and social justice of the communities of the County San Mateo.
General Responsibilities
On an overall basis, the Farm Manager oversees all farm management activities and Campesino support including mentoring and training. Additionally, the Farm Manager will participate in the presentation of programs for outside groups:
● Primary source of advice and counsel to Campesinos
● Purchases supplies, tools, and other farm inventory
● Maintains key infrastructure including fencing, the irrigation system, and the repair and maintenance of farm machinery
● Manage utility services including porta-potties, trash pickup
● Presents or co-presents on site educational programs
● Creates ecologically based crop plans
● Plants and harvests flowers, hay, and other income generating crops.
● Coordinates with the local Farmer’s Market booth
Desired Skills
● Language: Bilingual with fluency in Spanish
● Experience: Minimum of Three to five years of farm management experience including instruction and mentoring Campesinos and related activities in such areas as ecologically based crop management, crop rotation, marketing and business planning
● Experience in the leadership of teams including day-to-day activities and safe working practices
● Ability to use a computer and applications such as Microsoft or equivalent tools
● Excellent oral and written communications including teaching skills
● Valid California driver's license, clear driving record and the ability to pass a background check
